Tackling the Deficit: Where to next for road safety?

PACTS has published jointly with the RAC Foundation a report looking at the impact of recent government policies on road safety.

The main message of the report is that the safety gains of recent years will be put at risk without government commitment to road safety.

The findings of the report are based on a questionnaire circulated to road safety professionals in December. They reflect the responses of the sector to both budget reductions during 2010 and the local government financial settlement published before Christmas.

The report sets out the case for a clear strategic framework for road safety supported by targets and performance indicators over the next decade. This approach has been shown to bring additional reductions in deaths of between 4% and 19% in other OECD countries.

The document is available here for download or can be accessed via the RAC Foundation website here.
