Automated vehicles are moving towards wider deployment on UK roads. As this happens, we need to understand not only what the technology can do, but what it will mean for our roads, streets and the people who use them.
Ahead of the planned vote on the Statement of Safety Principles in spring 2027, and building on an existing programme and expertise in transport safety and the delivery of automated vehicles, PACTS will bring together experts from government, industry, research and the road safety community to explore these questions.
What will the conference cover?
The programme will look at:
-
- What automated vehicles are and how different forms of automation work
- The regulatory framework and how automated vehicles will operate on our roads
- What safety means in the context of automated vehicles
- What the public and road safety community expect
- The implications for walking, cycling, public transport and traffic management
- How we make sure safety is built into deployment from the start
The day will include expert presentations, panel discussions and interactive workshops, bringing different perspectives together ahead of the Statement of Safety Principles vote.
Speakers include Prof Richard Cuerden (TRL), Dr Nick Reed (Reed Mobility), Camilla Fowler (WSP) and Catherine Woodhead (Living Streets), with more to be announced soon.
