PACTS has responded to the government consultation on the regulations for Automatic Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS). We accept they may be useful on motorways in slow moving traffic (below 37mph) but we are opposed to their use at higher speeds or on other roads for which it was not designed and safety has not been assessed. Vehicles fitted with ALKS should not be registered as Autonomous Vehicles with DVLA. The driver must remain in charge at all times and should not be allowed to perform other activities or use infotainment systems when ALKS is activated.

According the the consultation, ALKS is traffic jam chauffeur technology designed to control the lateral and longitudinal movement of the vehicle for an extended period on motorways without further driver command.
