PACTS was delighted to support a Ministerial reception marking the 20th anniversary of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB). The event brought together Lord Peter Hendy, Rail Minister, Andrew Hall, Chief Inspector of RAIB, and key industry partners to celebrate two decades of independent safety investigations that have made rail travel safer for passengers and workers alike.
Since 2005, RAIB has carried out 777 deployments, published 427 reports, issued 52 urgent safety notifications, and generated nearly 1,900 safety recommendations that have directly improved standards across the rail sector.
Carolyn Griffiths, founder and first Chief Inspector of RAIB and Chair of the PACTS Rail Safety Working Party, said, ‘This event was a great opportunity to celebrate the creation of the RAIB and to bring together the key stakeholders from the rail industry. RAIB has shown that, with the engagement of the industry , learning from comprehensive investigation has prevented and will continue to prevent future incidents. The work of RAIB has amply demonstrated that such an independent, no blame investigation organisation is key to improving safety. PACTS advocates a similar investigation branch is warranted for the road transport where the safety risks are critically higher.‘
