IMPACT: Strengthening Post-Collision Safety Across the UK
IMPACT – the Centre for Post-Collision Research, Innovation and Translation – is pioneering ways to improve the post-collision response on our roads. While preventing crashes is crucial, IMPACT recognises that injuries will continue to occur, and the quality of the response can determine whether a crash results in recovery, long-term disability, or loss of life.
Working with researchers, clinicians, emergency services, and policymakers, IMPACT translates evidence into practical interventions along the Road Injury Chain of Survival – from crash recognition, safe bystander action, and timely rescue, to specialist care. Recent studies have focused on empowering bystanders to provide early care and addressing inequalities in treatment to ensure that women and older people are not disadvantaged.
Why IMPACT Joined PACTS
IMPACT chose to join PACTS because of its unique position at the interface of research, policy, and advocacy. PACTS provides a platform where robust evidence can be translated into action at a national level, ensuring that research findings are not confined to academic journals but are actively shaping safer transport systems.

This collaboration was also reflected when Tim spoke at PACTS’ 32nd Westminster Lecture, sharing IMPACT’s research insights and discussing how post-collision interventions can inform national road safety policy. The lecture highlighted both IMPACT’s pioneering work and how PACTS helps ensure evidence is translated into practical improvements for road users.
Current Focus: Challenges and Opportunities
The biggest challenge in road safety is recognising that prevention alone isn’t enough. Post-collision care is complex, involving multiple disciplines and organisations. IMPACT is now fostering partnerships to enable sustained action, with the potential to deliver tangible improvements.
Opportunities include equipping bystanders with confidence and tools, integrating technologies like eCall and telemedicine, and ensuring equitable access to life-saving interventions. Supported by the Road Safety Trust and Vision Zero South West, IMPACT is working to ensure that every road user has the best chance of survival and recovery should the worst happen.
