PACTS is pleased to welcome Professor Ashleigh Filtness as Chair and Dr Ruth Madigan as Vice Chair of its Road User Behaviour Working Party.
The Working Party brings together members to explore key issues around road user behaviour, including fatigue, human factors, and how people interact with vehicles and technology. Its work supports PACTS’ wider aim of improving transport safety through evidence-based research and policy.
Ashleigh Filtness is Professor of Transport Human Factors and Sleep Science at Loughborough University. She has spent over 17 years researching transport safety across road, rail and maritime sectors, with a particular focus on fatigue and sleepiness and their impact on safety. Her work aims to better understand the causes of fatigue and how it can be managed to reduce risks for vehicle operators and other road users. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications and led a wide range of research projects in the UK and internationally.
Dr Ruth Madigan is an Associate Professor at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds. A Human Factors specialist with a background in applied psychology, her research focuses on how people interact with vehicles and emerging technologies, and what this means for safety. She has worked on projects funded by organisations including the Department for Transport, the Road Safety Trust and the European Commission, and has published over 50 academic papers.
Together, Ashleigh and Ruth bring a wealth of expertise in human behaviour, fatigue and human-vehicle interaction. They will lead the Working Party in exploring key questions around road user behaviour and helping to shape PACTS’ work in this area.
