I hope you have heard quite a lot about PACTS since our last newsletter. In partnership with others, PACTS has sought to keep transport safety – particularly road safety – in the public eye.
Parliament will be dissolved on 30 March 2015, with the general election to be held on 7th May. As an All-Party Parliamentary Group PACTS ceases to exist during this period although PACTS as a charity continues. This newsletter is shorter than usual: we are constrained by Parliamentary rules and by election legislation, hence the flurry of activity in March. You will find information about recent activities, events and publications on our website. In particular:
- PACTS and Direct Line Constituency Road Safety Dashboard. This unique analysis presents road casualty rates relative to population by constituency boundaries for the residents of the constituency. It has received enormous media attention.
- Transport Safety Commission report UK Transport Safety – Who is responsible? This major report, which resulted from a lengthy select-committee style inquiry, calls for changes to the way that road safety is managed, particularly with regard to work-related road risk and the investigation of fatal collisions. The Commission is independent of PACTS.
- PACTS UK Road Safety Summit: Drink, Drugs and Mobile Phones on the 18th March which featured presentations on the new drug-driving legislation and the reduced drink-drive limit in Scotland.
After 7th May
There will be a great deal to do as a new Government – whatever its composition – will need to consider its strategy for transport safety. PACTS certainly intends to be part of the debate and we hope you will continue to work with us. Once the new Parliament is returned will be bring you further news. Meanwhile there is plenty of preparatory work to be done.

PACTS Working Parties
PACTS is delighted that international road safety expert, Richard Cuerden, Technical Director for Vehicle Safety at TRL, has taken up the role of Chair of the Vehicle Design Working Party.
Congratulations to Heather Ward, Chair of the Road Environment Working Party, for her AIRSO 50th Anniversary award for services to road safety.
