PACTS was pleased to submit its response to the HSE’s consultation on workplace injury and illness reporting.
In our response, we called for serious road and vehicle-related incidents arising from work activities to be more clearly included within the RIDDOR framework. This included fatalities and serious injuries arising from work-related driving or vehicle use; work-related collisions resulting in hospital treatment; serious near-miss events involving commercial vehicles; and dangerous occurrences relating to vehicle condition, maintenance or loading where a serious incident was narrowly avoided.
We believe the current framework does not adequately capture the scale of work-related road risk, with serious incidents often recorded through other routes rather than being treated consistently as work-related harm. Better reporting would support improved national learning, help identify common risk factors and ultimately contribute to preventing further deaths and serious injuries.
Alongside our consultation response, PACTS wrote to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Pat McFadden MP, outlining our concerns and calling for serious work-related road and vehicle incidents to be explicitly recognised within RIDDOR. We also stressed that any additional reporting requirements should be proportionate and avoid unnecessary duplication with existing police reporting.
PACTS looks forward to continuing to work with government and other stakeholders to ensure that work-related road risk is properly recognised within the wider workplace safety framework.
