The Department for Transport has published a list of links to information on specific speed camera sites.
PACTS comments: Commenting on the data published today about speed cameras, Robert Gifford, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, said “The publication of this information is clearly welcome. It is useful to have links to all the road safety partnerships in one place to access. What is far less clear cut is whether we can draw any real conclusions from the information provided in the way that it has been produced.
“As far as can be seen, each partnership has published the information in a different format. It is therefore almost impossible to draw any real conclusions about the effectiveness or otherwise of cameras in any specific locations. It is also unclear as to what individual citizens can understand from the tables provided.
“I would urge the Department to look to a common format for any further publication to ensure that this is more than just a token exercise.”

PACTS comments: After 16 quarters of reduction, it is of concern to see the number of pedestrian, motorcyclist and cyclist KSI increase. Though too early to draw any conclusions, it is a timely reminder that we must not take casualty reduction for granted year on year. Even in the midst of budget cuts and local authority reorganisation, the government and the road safety sector need to work to keep road safety a priority.
INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH– UN Decade of Action for Road Safety
As well as encouraging and supporting the sharing of Britain’s expertise and knowledge, PACTS is committed to using the Decade of Action as an opportunity to build on existing European and international contacts and learn from experience from outside the UK. Therefore each month a publication from a different country will be featured on the Decade of Action page on the PACTS website.
The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention has published ‘Status 2011‘, which lays out road safety statistics for Switzerland.
