Safer end–to-end journeys needed
The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety welcomed the publication today of the report Rail 2020 from the Transport Select Committee of the House of Commons.
Commenting on the report, David Davies, Executive Director of PACTS, said
“In recent years the UK rail network has achieved a good safety record. We welcome the demand by the Transport Select Committee that safety standards should not be compromised in the delivery of economic efficiencies.”
He added
“The Committee also recommends a greater focus on planning rail as part of sustainable end-to-end journeys, including bus networks, bicycle hire and low carbon vehicle hire. It is vital that investment goes into making these others modes safer – something that the Committee says the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland are doing. Spending on these modes could deliver substantial reductions in casualties.”
The Committee visited the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland where it found “more focus on sustainable end-to-end journeys, including bus networks, bicycle hire and low carbon vehicle hire”. (Para 75)
